Living Short Term 2009/1/26 06:50
I haven't been to Japan yet but I've wanted to visit since I was a kid. I was considering an IACE week-long tour package but in all honesty, I would like to be able to stay for about a month and really have a chance to soak up the culture, do some writing, etc.

Does anybody know what the most cost-effective way to do this would be? I'm figuring that I would need a few thousand to cover the plane tickets and the month of living expenses but what is a realistic needed amount of money? (I'm good at surviving on small meals, no expensive habits, etc.) Thanks.

I recommend to use a gaijin house:

Hi, for more cost effective ways to travel around japan, you should consider buying a Japan Rail Pass in your country before coming over to japan. It saves you alot of money, i've been here for 29 days leaving in 2 days time. i brought $4000 singapore dollars with me, i got around 10000 yen left with me. Its not really that expensive to eat in japan, im in tokyo right now, you can go to any of those food place that sell set meals, a shoba and a bowl of rice only cost around 580 yen and its fulling.

im thinking of staying for another month but i have no idea what i need to apply for if i wanna get a part time job here. and i doesnt speak japanese so i guess its kinda difficult.
