Can I bring seafood products back to US? 2009/7/5 21:43
Specifically surume is what I want to bring back. I get conflicting info from the various US websites on animal products, prepared foods, and the like. Also not sure if it would be considered "meat" which seems to be taboo to bring back.

Go figure it would be easier understanding customs in Japanese than English...

Thanks!

Apparently Yes 2009/7/6 10:02
I always wondered about that myself, too, so the last time I came back to the U.S. from a trip to Japan I asked the inspectors. (This was just last month.) Without hesitation they said processed seafood products, including dried squid, are okay. They do NOT consider seafood to be meat. I would be more comfortable if I had something in writing, but their verbal answer was detailed and clear enough that I would feel fine bringing such things into the country. Be sure to declare it, though.
