Hi, I have several 500 and 1000 yen notes from the 1960's I believe. Will I be able to use them on my next trip, if not, can I exchange them at a bank for new notes, or have I just lost the money? Thank you.

Technically, they are still legal tender, but I suspect most stores would be reluctant to accept them. You should be able to change them at banks, but you should note that they will actually be worth (slightly) more than their face value due to their age and rarity value.
