nuts and seeds in okinawa 2010/3/5 00:57
I am moving to Okinawa in April. I was wondering if you can purchase nuts/seeds/wheat berries etc? I have a special diet and it consists of these staple items as well as ethnic staples such as tahini, miso, carob (typical items food in health food stores or co-ops) If you know of any sources I would greatly appreciate any feedback

miso etc 2010/3/10 09:09
Miso being Japanese is obviously not going to be hard to find in Okinawa- you will see many varieties in your local supermarket. If you are a vegetarian be aware that miso here often contains fish stock although there are some varieties that use seaweed stock or no stock.

Tahini is called "neri goma" in Japanese and should be in the Chinese food section of most, but not all supermarkets. It's a little pricey and comes in small jars. Carob I have never once seen in the 12 years I have lived in Japan, so you will either have to source a specialist supplier here or order it from overseas.
