Kyoto restaurants 2010/3/8 02:48
Does anyone have any good links to restaurant guides in Kyoto? I've found copious amounts of websites for Tokyo restaurants but haven't been able to find many for Kyoto... :'(

traveler on a budget 2010/3/11 02:14
Many sites I've seen feature quite expensive cuisine... I"m wondering if you also have any suggestions on budget restaurants? Markets?

Would Nishiki market be a good place for lunch?
Any affordable places around Gion?

Thanks!

This is a tiny restaurant run by a woman(~10 counter seats & a few tables). Google map this coordinate 35.004328,135.775448
It is located below grade level but you can see from the narrow street. Take the elevator down.
She serves home cooking meal dishes that are displayed on the counter & you pick 3-4 items for 7-800yen. Cheap but delicious different from other cookie cutter menu restaurants.

budget restaurants are all over the place. Near and inside railway stations, near subway stations, shopping streets etc. Don't forget to check the 2 covered pedestrian streets. Many restaurants have signs in the window with prices (especially those serving 1 type of food, like donburi, curry etc.) or wax models of the dishes, also with prices.

The top floors of the JR Kyoto station has lots of places and so does the underground mall attached called Porta.
