Japan Rail Pass Child cost

My child is 11 and turns 12 May 23rd. The Japan Rail Pass has a discount for ages 6 to 11 years old. If I purchase the exchange order now before she turns 12 on May 23rd, then use it on June 22nd, is that ok? So is the age based on when you buy the exchange in the States or when you use it in Japan and cobert it over to the rail pass?

Before they make the pass they will check the passport so the age is based on the date of the day when you actually get the pass. At 12 years old an average child takes at least the same space as a short older woman..

My IACE travel agent called JR and the age of the child at the time of the purchase of the exchange ticket is the age, not when the ticket is converted to a JR pass. So I will be able to use the child fare even though the child will be 12 years and 2 weeks old at the time of the JR pass usage.
