Chili mince from tokyo (takadanobaba) 2010/7/1 17:33
My partner and I were in Japan in April and while we were staying in Tokyo (takadabanobaba - near shinjuku)we ate at a place down waseda ave. They sold a lot of fried things and ramen, but the thing im trying to figure out is a mince meat chili stew, i dont know what it was called but it was amazing, came with a solf boilled egg and rice.

does anyone know what it was? or might be?

It could be... 2010/7/2 10:39
sounds like one of the following but without more info on ingredients, hard to pinpoint:

- Mabo-dofu - made with chilis and minced meat, with chunks of tofu, served with rice
- Mabo-nasu - same as above but instead of tofu, there are chunks of eggplant instead
- Keema curry - minced mutton in curry sauce, served alongside or on top of rice
- Tan-tan Men - a kind of ramen, spicy chilis swimming in a minced beef and pork-based soup with angelhair-like noodles, very spicy

bibimba? 2010/7/6 08:10
Sounds like it might have been bibimba, a Korean dish (there are variations on the spelling). Could it have been a Korean restaurant?

Otherwise mabo-dofu or similar.

probably korean 2010/7/7 07:52
It could have been a korean place, they served kimchi there, but also gyoza, kaarage and other japanese dishes.
although ive looked up all of the suggestions and unfortunetly none of them look right.
It didnt have any vegtables in it, it was simply mince meat in a chilli/stew type sauce, with rice next to it and an egg on the side (whole which you cracked on top yourself)
Thanks for the suggestions though

魯肉飯 (ルーローハン) ? 2010/7/8 04:24
魯肉飯(ルーローハン)?

It seems a Taiwanese dish. But it doesn't seem to call for chilli.

on-tama Umakara-don at Hidaka-ya 2011/1/21 16:54
It's 日屋 Hidaka ya and from their menu I guess it is on-tama umakara don.

menu:

on-tama umakara don

on-tama is abbreviation for onsen tamago, half boild egg and uma-kara means "tasty and spicy".
don stands for donburi, meaning either the bowl itself or in this case rice bowl with topping.
