Food in Hiroshima/Miyajima (allergies) 2010/8/11 03:56
I am doing a day trip to Miyajima and Hiroshima from Kyoto later this month, as part of my Japan itinerary. I come to Japan with a very sensitive & severe allergy to shellfish. I will be bringing my detailed allergy cards in Japanese, but will there be decent food options for me? I get very sick even just from slight cross-contamination. Or should I pack myself a lunch the night before?

Some ideas 2010/8/11 12:39
Is octopus on the list? That is often used when making okonomiyaki, so that would be out due to possible cross contamination. If you aren't allergic to ''tako'', you could probably eat at a shop that specializes in those. It is a Hiroshima specialty. Or you could eat at a place that provides individual grills and grill your own chicken and beef. Or shabu shabu-which is cooked in your own pot and not on a common griddle. Or pack your own meal and treat yourself to warm, sweetred bean cakes, or dorayaki, that are sold in many places in Hiroshima and Miyajima-they are also a local specialty.

mollusc 2010/8/11 15:59
octopus are a mollusc, so I think they'll be risky. There is plenty of conga eel down there, and Hiroshima beef(mmmmmmm...fatty fatty hiroshima beef (drools)) as well as lots of sashimi coz it is cold water (apparently) which is good for fish. Miyajima specialises in oysters (no good for you) and the cake things shaped like maple leaves with bean paste etc inside. I dont think you'll go hungry.

sushimonster,

I wonder if you've used the website's search engine. These might help.

okonomiyaki? 2010/8/12 23:32
Thanks all. I have done plenty of general searches on various forums, and done lots of research of places I can eat in Kyoto and Tokyo, but this was specifically about Hiroshima.

In the same vein, I would LOVE to have some okonomiyaki in the city famed for it. Will I even be able to eat at any of the restaurants or do they all pose a high risk of cross-contamination due to being cooked on the same surfaces? Do vegetarian places exist or is this all just wishful thinking on my part?
