hi everyone,
me and my party of 6 are heading to tokyo over the new year and we were thinking of heading to mt fuji. We are not exactly looking to climb it, but we would like to set foot on Mt fuji.
i know we can see mt fuji from hakone, but we would like the option of experiencing mt fuji up close. Is there anyway we can get there? If not to the 5th station, maybe the foot of Mt Fuji? How much would the round trip cost(we will be purchasing the JR east pass)?
Is hakone worth a day trip visit? we would like to experience onsen there and we were thiking of buying the free hakone pass(3900 since we alr have the jr east pass).
thanks in advance for your responses!
regards, janpang

Is there anyway we can get there? If not to the 5th station, maybe the foot of Mt Fuji? The Fuji Five Lakes are located at the foot of Mount Fuji and are accessible around the year: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6900.htmlDepending on snow conditions, the road to the 5th Station might be fully open in January. If not, it is often open as far as the 3rd Station. However, there are no buses there. You would have to get your own transport or an expensive taxi. Or the one-day guided bus tour from Tokyo, which also goes up that road if possible: http://www.japan-guide.com/jtb2.html?id=GMT01TYOOF880WHow much would the round trip cost(we will be purchasing the JR east pass)?Access to the Five Lakes is explained here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6905.htmlIs hakone worth a day trip visit? we would like to experience onsen there and we were thiking of buying the free hakone pass(3900 since we alr have the jr east pass).Yes, I think it is worth it if you are interested in an onsen experience and views of Mount Fuji. Note that visibility of the mountain is best in the early mornings (before 9am). Even on clear days, visibility can become bad enough for the mountain to be invisible from Hakone. The chances to see it from the Fuji Five Lakes is somewhat higher.

uji you're the best. anyways what "other transport" options are there which we can utilise to get to the 3rd station?
as ridiculous as this question sounds, is there anyway we can walk to mt fuji from a nearby station or maybe from one of the fuji 5 lakes(lake ashi perhaps?)?

what "other transport" options are there which we can utilise to get to the 3rd station?Rental car or taxi as mentioned above. I suppose bicycle or walking would also be feasible. But unless the road is closed you should be able to drive or take a taxi up the the Kawaguchiko 5th Station. Note that for 6 people you will probably be better off renting a car than taking taxis. as ridiculous as this question sounds, is there anyway we can walk to mt fuji from a nearby station or maybe from one of the fuji 5 lakes(lake ashi perhaps?)?It is possible, for example the Yoshida trail leads from Sengen Shrine near Lake Kawaguchiko to the Kawaguchiko 5th Station. Or you could always walk along the road. Its a good 30km/5 hour climb though. Then again if the roads are closed to snow then the trails won't be in much better condition. Lake Ashi, on the otherhand isn't part of the Fuji Five Lakes and is about 50km away from the Fujinomiya 5th station on southern side of the mountain. I'd suggest you check out the following sections to orient yourself a little more to the Mount Fuji area: Mount Fuji: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2172.htmlClimbing Mount Fuji (with info on the 5th Stations): http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6901.htmlFuji Five Lakes: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6900.html

hey there yllwsmrf,
thanks for the feedback!anyway if we do walk, which station do we start our journey from? how long would the walk to mt fuji be?
secondly, if we take a taxi from the same station mentioned above, approximately how much would the cab fare cost?
i dont think we will be renting cars because we're unfamiliar with the roads in japan, plus rental rates are high, arent they?
thanks again for your responses!
