parents to parents wedding gift? 2010/11/7 05:50
We are American parents of the groom. We have exchanged gifts upon our initial meeting with the parents of the bride (Japanese) and will revisit them for the upcoming wedding in Japan. Is there any special custom for a gift between parents of the groom and bride at the time of the wedding beyond the customary and simple "visit gift"?

Nothing like that would be expected at the ceremony.

If you arrive in Japan with a small gift but don't have a chance to see them until the day of the wedding, then you could find a moment before or after the ceremony but it is not the appropriate time or place.

Relationship between the two families 2010/11/18 20:44
Traditionally, the relationship between the two families is considered ro be established at the ceremony of engagement, or Yuinou (結納), where the fiance, representing his family, gives something to the fiancee (of course, Yuinou ceremony is not a legal requisite). The two families are the host of wedding ceremony. Invitation to the ceremony is sent by the name of both families. The cost of wedding ceremony should be paid by the couple, in reality usually by their families.
