Earthquake Early Warning 2011/3/13 00:05
AU kddi provide Earthquake Early Warning on their keitai..how about softbank keitai? do they provide any service for softbank..i'm using softbank prepaid..

you mean tsunami? 2011/3/13 11:31
earthquakes are still not predictable so no warnings can be given. if an earthquake occurs at sea, then the chances and height of a tsunami can quickly be calculated.

i don't have the answer to your question although i have softbank and received no warning.

Earthquake warnings 2011/3/13 12:03
Nick,

As mentioned by the original poster, au KDDI provides an earthquake warning service free of charge to users, although the service is apparently not available for older phone models. Depending on the location, the alarm gives you a 10-30 second advance warning in the same way as the advance warnings now given on TV when a large tremor is imminent.
I've no idea whether similar services are provided by Softbank or Docomo, although if they aren't, I suspect both companies will hurriedly get their act together after this big earthquake.

Newer cell phones, for all three carriers, are able to receive the warning. But actually, SoftBank seems to be vastly behind others in the number of phone models that can pick up this kind of warning messages.

not on iphone 2011/3/13 12:34
i was completely caught off guard by the friday earthquake.

when i had an AU phone 2 or 3 years ago i got a warning when a large earthquake occurred in the middle of the night, it was not much but i got a few seconds to wake up before the shaking started.

if you have an iphone there are apps that will push earthquake data onto your phone. i think i will resort to this as the threat of a strong aftershock or a new series of big earthquakes in the kanto region is worrying.

damn softbank 2011/3/13 15:29
after googling for more info on the EEW, found out that the only softbank keitai available to receive EEW is NEC 831N. eventhough on softbank website said they'll implement the EEW gradually from summer 2010 onward..

i was inside car with wife, daughter and MIL, when MIL AU keitai suddenly buzz madly, soon after the big quake hit..we never knew the keitai has those EEW function..we're just out of house 3mins before it hit..damn softbank! .. seems AU n Docomo have it on their range of keitai..

fyi my MIL is using AU simple phone, those made easy for old people..now my heartjump every now n then when MIL keitai buzz..by the way i'm in aizu, fukushima, 1st earthquake n now nuke]clear meltdown ....
