Food expenses for backpacker 2012/2/3 22:44
I want to have my budget as tight as possible
My budget for foods is 1500 yen/day
300 yen for breakfast (onigiri)
1200 yen for lunch and dinner (Kombini bento or beef bown or ramen)
Is it possible to keep my budget around that?

thank you

1500 yen/day for backpacker, no ploblem! 2012/2/4 17:28
In Japan, we have plenty of options for eating. Of course, there are many fine restaurants which costs more than 10000 yen pre meal, there are much more cheap places where you can dine less than 500 yen. I will list some examples.

Cafeterias in universities/colleges. In many cases these are run by university COOP. You can find Ramen, Curry rice etc. Mostly less than 500 yen.

Bakeries. You will find small bakeries almost everywhere in Japan. Pastries are 100-300 yen (mostly around 150 yen).

Supermarkets. Most of them are located in the residential area, so that the tourist tend to stay away, but you can see the everyday life of the locals. Of course you can find bento, fruits and pastries.

Cheap restaurants. I guess cheap restaurants (500 yen for lunch and less than 1000 yen for dinner) is rare in the western Europe and north America. In Japan there are many.

"Konbini" is not so bad but costly.

(Today I Leaned, "gyudon" is "beef bowl" in English.)

And I can recommend to remember the bento-shops sell low-priced bentos.

Or if you want to heat up, food court areas in supermarkets. Some bentos are marked down after evening.

I think ramen is typically about 800 yen today.
Be careful not to be disappointed at cheap ramen with you.

You can live off 1500 a day, but you won't be eating a balanced healthy diet. If you're backpacking and doing a lot of walking/exploring/sightseeing this may affect your energy levels and leave you feeling more tired than usual. Cheap Japanese food tends to be fried or (like onigiri) be heavily rice based. There is little fruit/veg in cheap food. Bananas are cheap in supermarkets and could be a good thing to buy plenty of and eat. Fresh orange juice cartons are also quite cheap and have plenty of vitamins. Remember, food isn't just about filling you up, otherwise we'd all just eat 2 cups of rice a day and be done with it.

I've been living in Japan for two months now, and when I average out how much I spend on food, it's probably ~800 yen.

For breakfast, I usually have yogurt, drink, fruit & bread. For lunch, I have a drink, bread and snack. For dinner I have salad, bento, drink & fruit.

If you go to the supermarket after 7-8pm (depending on the place) you can get heavily discounted ready made food (like bentos).

I found discounted sushi (and many other foods) in the basement floor of department stores after 4pm. Lawson and 7-11 had reasonably priced fresh foods in the refrigerated cases. Noodle stands on the street were reasonable.
