I hear ear piercing in Japan is frowned upon? 2012/3/12 11:20
I want to go on a foreign exchange there.... and, well, my ears have been pierced since I was an infant. Will they question it? Should I take out my earrings if I'm there?

No, it's not frowned upon. I think this one is a relatively recent and decent thread about the topic:

If the exchange program is with junior or senior high schools, you might just have take them out as some schools don't allow students to wear accessories to school.
