I want to go on a foreign exchange there.... and, well, my ears have been pierced since I was an infant. Will they question it? Should I take out my earrings if I'm there?

No, it's not frowned upon. I think this one is a relatively recent and decent thread about the topic: http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+84848If the exchange program is with junior or senior high schools, you might just have take them out as some schools don't allow students to wear accessories to school.
