Afternoon tea in Tokyo? 2012/3/24 08:52
My mother and I will be visiting family in Tokyo (this will be my first trip to Japan!). I thought it would be fun to treat my aunt and very girly nine-year-old cousin to a fancy tea service. Could anyone recommend a good place for afternoon tea (high tea)? I looked at the Ritz Carlton, as they have a Teddy Bear Tea geared toward children, but at 4300 yen, it is a bit out of budget.

Any recommendations in the 2500 - 3500 yen range? To clarify, I am looking for high tea rather than an ochaya.

Thank you in advance!

Shenai,

I understand you are looking for an authentic English style afternoon tea service.

How about St. Christopher's Garden in Jiyuugaoka? I wouldn't exactly say they are the best, but their price range might be perfect for you, and the atmosphere is probably just right for a girly nine-year-old. I've been there twice and the authenticy that they "aim" is quite nice. A very cozy place, indeed.

Here are their prices;

How about Imperial Hotel, Westin, Peninsula Tokyo or Mandarin Oriental? The price range will be around 3,500.

I would choose Imperial's Rendezvous Lo unge that offers the afternoon tea for 2980 + service charge or the Imperial Rounge Aqua for 3,150 +S/C.

You can not find the menu on the English page but definitely they have it.

Thank you, this information is very helpful!
Since we will be traveling to Tokyo proper from Higashi-kurume, St. Christopher's might not be as convenient - It sure looks cozy and inviting, though! Would it be appropriate, at any/all of these locations, to dress up, or would we look out of place? My cousin loves to dress up (as do I, on occasion!)

The customers at St. Christopher's, at least during afternoon tea hours, are generally casual-looking in jeans etc.

But of course, it's a kind of a place where people can come dressed up on their way back from a wedding or something. They actually arrange wedding receptions there, so the interior/exterior itself suits people dressed up.

The downside may be that the garden which you can see through the big fancy glass windows is small and all the plants are planted in pots instead of soil. You do need to walk for a while from the station into a peaceful part of the town, so that can be good or bad depending on your situation.

I suppose hotels will provide a luxurious atmosphere while St. Christopher makes you feel a bit more like you are having tea in an English home.

Having once been a nine-year-old girl who likes to dress up, I can't really say which I would've loved then. I do like the decor and view at St. Christopher. I'm not sure if it's worth the trip, though, if you have no business of going to the southern part of Tokyo. But Jiyuugaoka is a popular town for girls and ladies to shop, dine or walk around in.

Just for reference.

The majority of 3+ star hotels in Tokyo offer afternoon tea. There is no need to go to Jiyugaoka. People are usually well dressed at afternoon teas, so you won't feel out of place if you dress up. If you're coming from Kurume, choose a hotel in Shinagawa or near Tokyo Station.

@Tokyonet While Kurume is in Kyushu, Higashi-Kurume is in Tokyo.
