I think I will change the flights to next year, or cancel depending on which will loose me the least money. However, it's probable that we will be priced out of the market by next year. For sure we can expect fuel price increases on airline travel. I will thank God that we are far more fortunate than some and donate more to the Ukraine appeal. None of us would have felt right going on a trip when so many brave and courageous people are suffering such a nightmare in Ukraine.

Contrary to what the Japanese government has gaslit many of you into believing, closing the borders to to foreigners has had zero impact on domestic case and death rates. The ongoing closure is entirely political. However, given the persistent weakness of the domestic travel market, and the acceleration of trends that doom Japan's economy in the long-term, the prevailing political winds may change sooner than we think.
Indeed, the recent statement and proposal from Keidanren, which advocates a full resumption of international traffic, is big. Given that the government has generally acted on these statements/proposals within 3-4 weeks of their issuance in the past, I maintain my prediction that tourism to Japan will resume in late spring/early summer.

In a sane world, Japan would see the scrapping of travel restrictions (and the larger acknowledgement that they don't and never did serve much purpose) and quickly remove its own ban.
Unfortunately, while Japan cosplays as a "normal" country and holds onto a G7 membership (largely for reasons of security/expediency to the US and Europe), it's behaving more like China in terms of Covid policy, in spite of Japan having performed significantly worse by just about every metric.
I can't help but feel this is exacerbated by the global media, who have either ignored the issue entirely, or reported incorrectly on it. In the past month, travel industry publication Skift (which is supposed to be written by/for insiders) has published two articles either implying or declaring that Japan has reopened to tourists. I see many people on social media unaware that Japan is still closed (though thankfully, an equal amount who are utterly frustrated by the endless closure).
Personally, I never thought Japan would stay closed longer than Australia. It looks now like New Zealand might even reopen before Japan does, which would've been unthinkable even a few months ago. Taiwan has even stated it could open to tourism in July. It's maddening that Japan won't even put out a timetable, even if the opening itself still ended up being far off.

Good news about Korea. Had no idea Taiwan might be letting in tourists by July. I thought the same and couldn't imagine them doing it before Japan. I guess it may end up being around the same time, with a bit of luck.
Seems like they're raising the cap for business travellers and students to 10,000 per day from April. Just another 90,000 to go...

The equation is simple, really! Do voters like harsh restrictions despite not really serving a purpose? Then keep borders closed and be reelected.

At least the sentiment regarding that seems to be slowly changing, according to the latest polls.

Makoto Shimoaraiso, official in Japanfs cabinet secretariat says international tourists could be admitted in the gnot too distant futureh once 6th Covid wave is under control and a 7th is prevented. "Our basic concept is that if there is a huge difference in the infection status between Japan and other countries, we have to be strict in border controls,h said Dr. Shimoaraiso
Looks like we could see a reopening in a few months, provided the covid situation stays under control. We know the BA2 peak can subside quickly (see Denmark figures) without additional mitigation, hopefully Japan and other countries hold their nerve.

Thank you for the information. This thread is awesome to keep up with the news about Japan's borders.
I wonder if that means a 2022 opening? Even so, I don't have high hopes for an opening of borders this year, so I'm aiming my trip to Japan August 2023. But, if it does open this year, maybe I'll go during Xmas season 2022 (without quarantine protocols, 'cause I won't have enough days off from work if quarantine is included).

I would imagine it means a potential late summer/autumn opening, but dependent on the virus situation being stable globally.

Hong Kong have said they will be announcing their plan for quarantine free travel once their 5th wave has subsided.
Never in a million years did I think there was a chance Hong Kong would do it before Japan. I genuinely believe the elections in July are the only reason it's a possibility. I'm hopeful that if the borders aren't open before then, they will be very soon after.

That's actually not optimistic at all, because: 1) numbers in many European countries and Australia are going up (likely due to people stopped caring and no real measures) - the hospitals aren't getting full, but Dr Shimoaraiso speaks about infection numbers here 2) Japan is notorious for lack of testing capacity and the numbers at any time will by default be lower than other countries

Well, in Europa cases are rising again at a quite fast rate but, for the moment, no new restrictions are being applied as the health care systems are not being overburdened (as said: for the moment).
The current view seems to be: We did what we could, we vaccinated everyone who wanted (3 times by now), there is quite some form of natural immunity as well, so unless the health systems is threatened, we will not put new restrictions. It wouldn't be a surprise at all if a 4th vaccination will be offered around the summer.
Naturally, this could all change very quickly in case it escalates nonetheless.

I'm not speculating anything, but cruise companies are taking reservations for voyages to Japan departs from March 2023 and onward. I don't see any cruise to Japan in 2022. So they are expecting japan will open next year but not this year.

No. Cruise companies just wanna go with a safe bet. Them not running cruises till next year doesn't mean a thing.
If Japan announces earlier openning. Cruise companies will schedule earlier cruises.

So they are expecting japan will open next year but not this year. No, that would appear to be wrong. I was checking the Yokohama port schedule earlier today and I see that there are lots and lots of scheduled cruises from later this year - check October 2022 if you like - there are eight cruises listed departing the port.

Which cruise companies are those? I've only checked the ones that I usually cruise with. Ponant is canceling their voyages to Japan this year. If Japan didn't open this year, I'm sure whatever cruises you see for this year will be cancelled again.
