You bump your head on a door of the train or the bus if you are taller than 180cm.

Plenty of Japanese girls/ women are 5'5" or near 164cm- it is at the taller end of average. I am 5'9" (175cm) and have Japanese female friends my height or even slightly taller.
Don't worry too much about this kind of thing. As a foreigner you stand out anyway, and Japanese people are not prejudiced against tall people. I often get admiring comments about my height and how long my legs are.
The only problem for a woman my height in Japan is finding clothes and shoes to fit, but someone under 170cm won't really have that problem.

I'm 5'11 (180 cm) however, I'm built fairly large. A man mentioned earlier his wide shoulders, mine are wide too. The thing I think would end up being comical would be wearing indoor slippers. I have slightly larger feet than my friends that are both 6'3" (29cm feet). I also weigh 195 lbs (89kg) while not being fat, nor muscle bound. I don't think I've seen any japanese built like me unless they're sumo lol.So, It's not just height, being western alone will make you stand out. If you really want to stand out, wear some pants on your head.

The average top division sumo wrestler is about 140- 150kg, so you're not even close to being that big! I live near some of the sumo stables and occasionally see junior wrestlers wandering around and even those guys are large- very tall, very wide. You'd probably look tiny in comparison ;-)
