Dir en grey is not metal, they've got various styles for which they cannot be classified as only one... the only tracks you can consider metal-some are the ones from 'Marrow of a Bone'. I do reccomend it though. Also, you might like to try ~MUCC ~12012 ~girugamesh
~Versailles ~Hizaki Grace Project ^They're like metal with a bit of symphonics.

Just noticed this but it seems no one suggested Siam Shade. Probably the best hard rock band in Japan. Well they disbanded but their music are good. And most of the members are still around. I'm surprised that no one brought them up. Is it because they're not as mainstream?

I like mostly visual kei bands from the 80s and 90s. I'd post my list, but it's lengthy.

That's crap. Visual Kei is still extremely popular here. I see it played on the big screen in Shinjuku all the time!!
Also, I have not seen anyone mention girugamesh. I love them... very cute band.

Need help locating J-Rock band

I visited Japan in September of 2001. I bought a CD there at a shop in Shibuya. I can't remember the name of the band except that it was something vaguely institutional and ubiquitous (e.g. The Postal Service). The CD had very few songs on it, 5-6 perhaps, and one standout track entitled something like "the letter" or "the note". The cover to the CD was mostly black. The lyrics were in English, albeit not the best English. I want desperately to remember what this band was called. If anyone can help me I would be most appreciative.

J-Rock band you may like

Abingdon Boys School. That is a really good rock band, i love the way their guitars sound and the drummer is really good.
The singer is the guy from T.M.Revolution.
Their music is very professional. and they have a modern rock vibe. They even have a D.J.
my favorite songs are strength, howling (inch up) and As One.
They are Japanese, but most (if not all) of the titles of their songs are in english.
they sing a couple of songs in "english", but their english isn't very good.
