Penn State vs. Iowa Saturday, Sept. 26 2009/9/22 06:00
Eric, Saturday's game between two Big Ten Conference teams should be an interesting match with both teams 3-0 this year. Penn State has been criticized this year for scheduling three easy games so far. Saturday's game will allow both teams to show their Big Ten stuff. Penn State will be highly motivated not only to justify its #5 AP ranking (#4 in the coaches' poll) but also to answer Iowa in particular, the only team to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions during the 2008 season, Iowa winning 24-23 in a close match at Iowa. Beaver Stadium at Penn State will be rocking on Saturday. The students are planning a "white out," and 82-years-young Joe Paterno will be coaching from the sidelines. No matter which team you favor, this will be the nationally televised game to watch on Saturday, 8 p.m EST, 5 p.m PST, on ABC.

Okinawa lawmaker 2009/9/22 09:34
I am reading about a Japanese lawmaker, part of the newly elected Democratic Party of Japan, who is pushing to shrink the US presence on the southern Japanese island. What is unique is, he is a Nisei, named Danny Tamaki, the son of a Japanese woman and an unknown American GI.

This has to be a first for Japan's parliment. I cannot recall anyone with mixed blood ever serving in government.

The WSJ newspaper says the new government is serious about reducing its dependency on the US. It reports Japan pays $2 billion a year to cover the cost of the US footprint in Japan where 45,000 American service members are stationed. Half are on Okinawa.

US bases make up 20 percent of the land on Okinawa and there have been incidents that have made Americans unpopular and resented.
Eight thousand Marines are due to ship out from Okinawa to Guam by 2014.

This appears to be another chapter in the wind-down like we went through in the 1960s and again in the 70s.

Danny Tamaki in the Diet proves the times (and obviously the Japanese) they are a changing.

On a slightly related note, the Democratic Part of Japan also has the Japan's only parliamentarian without Japanese blood whatsoever:

Japanese Finn 2009/9/22 10:11
That certainly is a remarkable development. It's interesting that he changed his last name to a more Japanese sounding 'Tsu..."

There was a German national who taught at the Yokohama International School in the 1950s who had adopted Japanese first and last names.
Mr. Yajima was born to German parents, served in the German Army in Russia, then married a Japanese lady and adopted her family name.

Uji san;
Do you think it would be beneficial to Japan to make its own way on military issues and part company with the US ?

Question: 2009/9/22 10:32
How old is this Danny Tamaki?

Danny 2009/9/22 11:37
Danny is 49.
He looks younger than that in the WSJ pix.

Nihongo, Football & Politics 2009/9/22 15:57
It's nice to see this forum come to life again.
Kozue-san: Thank you for mentioning kiwotsukete. That is a term that I used often although I understood it to mean "Take it easy." I had never heard the term yoroshiku and was feeling pretty stupid.
Barbara-san: I may take your advice and watch Penn State whip Iowa next Saturday. I gave up on the local Washington "Deadskins" long ago although I did watch them manage to squeak by yesterday. I'd be a Steeler fan but we don't get very many of their games here. Living inside the beltway isn't good for much of anything except watching politicians tell lies.
Eric-san: Very interesting, Danny Tamaki article, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125348661429226233.html. Thanks for pointing it out.
Uji-san: Very interesting Tsurunen Marutei article. Arigatou.

Gold & Black 2009/9/22 22:42
Dave-san:
Don't count the Hawkeyes out just yet.
The U of Missouri has a "blackout" Saturday once or twice a year, like Penn State's "whiteout."
If you're a Steelers fan, why not come on over to the good guys who wear Black & Gold (just like the Steelers.)
You'll be glad you did.

Cheers!

Send them to Yokohama 2009/9/23 00:56
Dave-san, Please refer to gTake it easyh on page 74.

I canft imagine 8,000 marines moving to Guam with their dependants, as the island is much smaller than Okinawa--you can stand in the middle of the island and see the ocean on both sides. It is a beautiful island though with great beaches. I was on a hop from Travis AFB to Yokota AB once and got stranded on Guam for two days, during which time the water main in Agana broke and we were out of water, couldnft even flush the toilets, and to make matters worse, we ran out of beer! My traveling companions were a retired Air Force Sergeant and a retired General who was MacArthurfs supply officer in the Korean War, so I heard some great war stories.

Eric, I had a two-year tour in Okinawa, 1978-80, and there were several incidents of American servicemen raping Okinawan girls, I think one was only twelve years old. There are too many troops confined to too small a space, with not much to do. There is BC street with a bunch of run-down bars, and Moon Beach, thatfs it! The U.S. should pull the forces out of Okinawa and send them to mainland Japan, not to Guam, as it would just transfer the problems to Guam. I remember the General at Kadena AB put the Air Force service clubs off limits to Marines under the rank of E-5 because they were always beating up on the Air Force guys. Send them to Yokohama and Tokyo as there is plenty to do and plenty of room to do it in!

It has been almost 65 years since WWII, so I think it is time that Japan assumed all the responsibility for its defense. They should let us keep a naval base, air force base, and marine base there to keep peace in the Pacific.

Japanese Constitution 2009/9/23 02:49
Question : If the US were to pull out, would the Japanese have to change or modify their constitution in order to provide their our forces or would their defense force mandate be sufficient ? And as for keep the peace in the area.. lets hope we all can do this..Methinks Kim Jong is up to no good ill. Are we techincally still at war with Korea ?

Japan could adopt the Massachusetts system and change their constitution on a daily basis.

My Heart is Heavy 2009/9/24 09:12
My friends I need your help! I may lose your friendship over this. I may be banned from this forum. But, here it is: today President Obama made a speech before the United Nations General Assembly in which he said that the borders of Israel should be returned to the configuration of the pre-1967 Six Day War, which means that the Old City of Jerusalem would be returned to the Palestinians and the Golan Heights returned to Syria. The President in effect is throwing Israel under the bus, as I donft think Israel can survive as a nation if this happens. To me Jerusalem is the holiest place on earth and the center of the universe. I apologize for bringing this matter up in this forum, as I know that we are supposed to be non-political, but I am not one of those Christians who pull out their religion on Sunday morning and put it back on the shelf Sunday night, I live it 24/7. Please call your senators and voice your displeasure with President Obamafs change in U.S. policy towards Israel. Ifll thank you, the Israelis will thank you, and best of all God will thank you. (Please forgive me, Ifll never bring up politics again).

Let not your heart be heavy.. we are living through some dark times and the light is still not in sight. For my part you are forgiven in occasionally wandering from the exact intention of this forum as this is what social media is about. I can't blame you for voicing your concern that I share.
And I would not hold you to your pledge to never bring up your concerns.. or anyone elses here...even football..thats one of those team sports right?

Middle East fumble 2009/9/24 11:22
Many Americans are disturbed by our new president's approach to international relations.

It appears that President Obama would prefer a better relationship with the thugs of the world, instead of our traditional allies, plus Japan and Germany. which have supported rights of individuals, the primary producers of new ideas in a capitalist economy.

I predict the current White House occupant will repeat the failures of Jimmah Cahtah and become trapped in the WH, gelded, in his last two years.

At a time when the US needs to reinvigorate our industrial sector, the president is talking endlessly about socialist health care and a carbon taxes, both costing huge money amd subtracting jobs from America.

He's come down on the wrong side of Israel and Honduras recently. Both acts make me embarrased.

Barak Obama, if that is his name, is not my president.

Opinions on football and other stuff 2009/9/25 04:29
Eric-san & Wally-san: Looks like two for the Hawkeyes and two for Penn State. Barbara-san went to Penn State and I was born in PA although I spent very little time in school there, only part of 5th & 9th grade. We'll see Saturday who celebrates. It should be a good game.
Moving the Third Marine Division from Okinawa sounds to me more like a public works project for Guam than a smart military move. I personally think we are long overdue on closing all of our overseas bases and bringing our troops that are not engaged in military operations back to CONUS.
As for the Middle East, I can't help thinking the problems there would have been resolved long ago if the US hadn't been meddling there for the past sixty years.
