Home - March 28/30, 2002

In several locations downtown, the blossoms of the Somei Yoshino trees are starting to open, but in most cases the percentage of open blossoms still stays below or around one percent. The beautiful Accolade Cherry trees, on the other hand, are already approaching full bloom. One of the best loactions to view Accolade Cherry trees now is at the small pedestrian passage at Chilco and Comox Street. Also several Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) have started flowering.

There are several Accolade trees at the NE corner of Beach Avenue and Thurlow Street. On the opposite side of Beach Avenue next to the bus station stands a similarly looking Whitcomb Cherry tree and another Accolade.

Downtown- Georgia and Bute Street
28 March 2002

At the SW corner of Georgia and Bute Street stand some of the earliest blooming Somei Yoshino trees that I am aware of. About 10 percent of the blossoms are already open. The picture on the left shows some of them.

Downtown - Alberni Street between Burrard and Thurlow Street
28 March 2002

This is the location of another few early blooming Somei Yoshino trees. About 1-2 percent of the blossoms are open by now.

Queen Elizabeth Park
28 March 2002

The blossoms of the large cherry tree at the east entrance of the Queen Elizabeth Park are relatively underdeveloped compared to the Yoshino blossoms downtown.

Oakridge - Ash Street between 45th and 49th Avenue
28 March 2002

This is one of the best places to view Whitcomb Cherry trees in Vancouver. For about 100 meters, Ash Street is decorated by the early flowering Higanzakura cultivar. Unfortunatelly, many of this year's Whitcomb Cherry blossoms throughout the city seem to have been damaged by the cold weather of February and March which is reducing the intensity of the flowering Whitcomb trees compared to last year.

UBC - The Barn Coffee Shop
30 March 2002

The blossoms of the two Accolade Cherry trees in front of "The Barn" have started to open in large numbers.
