Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 15
Both leaders lost to strong line-ups today and so both finished with 11 wins but Andrasoyama outscored his rival and finished two points ahead, ensuring he wins his third Makuuchi yusho...a very impressive achievement.
In Juryo Jakusotsu slaughtered the points leader Wakamasuto but Sasuke also won and, as he has a better points total, Sasuke wins the Juryo yusho. This is Sasuke's first yusho in any division. Omedetou!
And in Makushita long-time leader Hakuhosho beat his challenger handily to win the divisional championship. This is also a first-ever yusho. Well done also to his challenger Warauyama, who had a fabulous debut.
Finally, good news and bad news: we are glad to report that Yokozuna Yumezukuri was able to retain his rank. But Ozeki Kakushoyamaii lost and fell to a rare losing record, and so will need a winning record in July to stay at the ozeki rank.
Well done to all the winners, and we hope to see you back in July!

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 14
Sekiwake Survivor and Andrasoyama lead Makuuchi with 11 wins each. The latter has a one-point scoring advantage but will need to score well as the sekiwake defeated him in their head-to-head bout in the first week. Even a loss may not be catastrophic as long as the other loses. Anything can happen!
In Juryo it's down to three contenders. A win for Wakamasuto will give him the yusho as he has a massive scoring advantage. His rivals Sasuke and Jakusotsu will be hoping for the points leader to slip up. And Jakusotsu will have the chance to do just that as they are matched against each other on the final day.
Makushita is simple: The two leaders, Hakuhosho and newcomer Warauyama, have a death match tomorrow. The winner will take the prize.
Looking at the banzuke, Komusubi Yamashiro has sadly failed in his ozeki run and will have to start again in July. Sekiwake ScreechingOwl has had another fine outing but is still a few wins short of ozeki promotion numbers. A win tomorrow especially will extend that run into Nagoya. Sekiwake Survivor, if he wins tomorrow, will have 30 wins in three tournament and either a yusho or jun yusho. The game master will certainly be considering promotion prospects there, but a win tomorrow would be a minimum requirement. Ozeki Kakushoyamaii recovered valiantly from an awful start but faded somewhat in the second week and now needs win tomorrow to avoid kadoban status in July. And finally, Yokozuna Yumezukuri has also fought back admirably from a nightmare start and must defeat Yokozuna Pandaazuma tomorrow to retain his rank.
Good luck to all the contenders!

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 12
Andrasoyama fell to a very powerful line-up and allowed Sekiwake Survivor and Norizo back into a share of the lead.
Wakamasuto, Jakusotsu and Sasuke keep on winning to stay in the Juryo lead. And Hakuhosho has finally broken the deadlock to take the sole lead in Makushita.

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 11
Andrasoyama took advantage of Norizo's loss today and took the sole lead. Sekiwake Survivor is the only player in the chasing pack with Norizo.
The Juryo lead has been whittled down to four: Wakamasuto, Sasuke, Tomatsu and Jakusotsu all have 8 wins. Hakuhosho and Sansho both won again to stay in the Makushita lead with 9-2 records.
by Pandaazuma, 2022/5/18

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 10
Of the three leaders yesterday, Norizo and Andrasoyama prevailed to reach kachikoshi on day 10 and share the lead.
Juryo is still unusually open with seven players all on 7-3 records. Hakuhosho and Sansho now lead Makushita with 8 wins.
by Pandaazuma, 2022/5/17

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 8
Norizo leads all alone as we reach nakabi. Yokozuna Pandaazuma, Sekiwake Survivor and Andrasoyama are one win off the pace.
Juryo remains open with five leaders who have 6-2 records. And in Makushita Hakuhosho and Hakubayama share the lead with seven wins.
by Pandaazuma, 2022/5/15

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 5
Norizo is the sole leader of Makuuchi on day 5. The former Ozeki has been perfect so far. Yokozuna Pandaazuma is part of a four-player chasing group.
Six players lead Juryo in a very open race. Eight others are hot on their tail. And Hakubayama, Kichijiro and Tochinojo are the last remaining unbeaten players in Makushita.

Natsu Basho 2022 - Day 3
Welcome all to the Natsu basho. Plenty of uncertainty on the dohyo but it's nice to see exciting tournaments with some half decent rikishi competing. We have been deprived of that for quite some time.
Ozeki Kakushoyamaii (1-2) is on a yokozuna run. He needs 11 wins. Will need to get back to winning ways after today's slaughter at the hands of Chankoyama, who scored a remarkable 10 points. Komusubi Yamashiro also has a chance to return to his old rank of Ozeki. He needs only 8 wins to get the 31 needed for the promotion nod and is off to a promising 2-1 start. Sekiwake ScreechingOwl (2-1) also has a chance of promotion but needs 12 wins. Plenty of work to do there. And finally Yokozuna Yumezukuri needs to be careful as he is kadoban and needs 8 wins to stay at the top rank.
Metzinowaka, Chankoyama, Norizo and Sumio are all early leaders in Makuuchi. The Juryo and Makushita races are still taking shape.
Good luck to all the players!
