September 3, 2014 - Chureito Pagoda in Summer

After many hours of internet searching I finally found the location of the iconic pagoda and Mount Fuji picture that seems to be everywhere (thanks to Japan Guide). So finally on my third trip to Japan I went to see it for myself.

The approach to Chureito pagoda starts with a torii gate... and then the climbing begins!

I cannot begin to describe how it felt climbing 1000 steps in 38 degree heat!

It was worth it though, the view from the top was lovely and the whole place was practically deserted!

Sadly, as is often the case in summer, Mt Fuji was hiding behind the clouds she continually produces.

The view of the pagoda with Mt Fuji in the background is achieved by climbing amongst trees onto a dirt shelf above the pagoda.

Although Fuji spent the afternoon topped in clouds it was a brilliant half-day trip from our time in Kawaguchiko and totally worth the trek from the closest station.

I'm very much looking forward to visiting Chureito once more for hanami in 2016!

I highly recommend this side-trip for any season, even without the sakura or autumn leaves it is a magnificent view across the 5 lakes region.
