Visiting the Snow Monkeys in Nagano

Our family are visiting the snow monkeys in January. I understand the walk is 30 minutes on a snow covered road. Is it necessary to wear snow boots or would walking shoes/runners be o.k?

when i went to the monkey park last year I wore cleats over my leather walking shoes. It really made it easier to walk without slipping. I got the cleats from Amazon, they're made from rubber and stretch over the toe and heel of the shoe.
