School for voice acting course 2014/4/13 12:40
My daughter wants to study Anime voice acting in Japan. Any recommendations on schools for International students?. She had found one or two on line but we're not sure if it's legit or not. We've contacted them but never replied. The other school had sent us a brochure in Japanese. My husband and I don't read or speak Japanese so it really wasn't very helpful. Please advise. Thank you.

I don't mean to discourage a teenage dream, but how would she cope with classes if she cannot read Japanese? Additionally, if she has an accent or moreover cannot read the Japanese scripts, there will be a limit of roles she can play, and animation acting is competitive enough.

If she does read/speak Japanese fluently, why not ask her to translate the brochure for you? It would be good training. Or you can name the schools and perhaps someone on this forum can study their official websites for you.

Otherwise, you can encourage her to start by attending language schools. We've all been young, and we had dreams. Those dreams cannot be granted overnight, but the importance of it is to keep dreamning. Then you'll end up somewhere.

Sorry if I didn't make my self clear. My daughter speaks and read Japanese. I will include the schools she's been looking at as soon as I get them. Thank you.

If your daughter can read and speak Japanese, then she should do a search in Japanese on a search engine. It brings up many results and a lot of the sites even have English pages.

http://www.anime.ac.jp/en/subject/voice.html
http://www.amgakuin.co.jp/contents/voice/
http://www.tohogakuen.ac.jp/en/
http://ncie.neec.ac.jp/en/creators/act/

Anime voice actors also don't make a lot of money (many have multiple jobs unless they make it really big), so I would suggest encouraging your daughter to go to school in her home country first, get some kind of degree or training, and then consider a voice acting school. Itfs always good to have a back up plan, especially for such a competitive and unpredictable field.

Thank you very much. We have checked out the top of the list(Anime.ac.jp). And yes she is actually going to college in one of the best Technology Institute in the US this fall taking Computer Science/Game Design. You have been very helpful. I appreciate it.
