Haguro San Visit

Hello!
I was looking to visit Mt. Haguro and I was hoping someone might be able to help me with some suggestions. I will be purchasing a JR Pass and arriving from Tokyo. I was wondering if it would be better to rent a car or take a bus from Tsuruoka Station?
Any ideas of the best method is appreciated!

If you plan to visit just Hagoro-san, then public transportation will be fine. Especially if you plan to hike up the old approach. Just look up the bus timetable and plan accordingly.
However, if you also plan to visit the other shrines, a rental car comes in more handy. Likewise, if you just plan to visit the shrine of Hagurosan without walkkig the old approach, a rental car will free you from relying on the not-so-frequent buses.
