miyama x kurama 2014/6/21 03:42
We are planning a trip and we decided to put some really natural landscapes, with natural short hiking, some feel of old Japan, and the possibility to do something (for example: to experience japanese pottery with the local craftguys).

As we will stay most days on Kyoto, we mapped those great places: Kurama and Miyama. But is really dificult to decide.

Would you please help us?
Thanks!!!

Miyama isn't really hiking. It is more of walking a lot.
Unless you actually walk from Kyoto city and not train+bus.
The town is very old and is still functional. Meaning people actually live and work there and it isn't one of those "artificial" open museums.

Kurama mountain has much hiking. Large trees with large roots. Watch your steps! It has many temples and shrines; some of which aren't interesting to look at. Kurama temple is somewhat more exciting though. Kurama has an onsen 10 minutes away from the end of the hiking trail. It isn't anything special and is pricey. But if you can't wait for a shower.... it may be a good alternative.

I recommend the walk from Uji to Ise for the fit.
Climbing Fushimi Inari for the bored.
And the walk from Kyoto station to lower Kamo shrine via Gion by the Kamo river from the city walker.
Lastly, just completing Enryakuji Temple atop Mount Heian in a day is a challenge in itself. The place is huge!! And much green forest, soil, and old temples for the speedster.
