Osaka - Takamatsu route advice

Heyo,
I was thinking of going an alternative route from Osaka to Takamatsu instead of rail going by ferry from Kobe through Shodoshima. However I just noticed the ferry leaving on the 28th is cancelled on 08.00 departure. The next departure is around 11.00 instead.
It feels too late to me as I wanted to see some of Shodoshima too. There is a boat from Himeji to Shodoshima but it is rather expensive going there by Shinkansen.
How is going by bus to Takamatsu from Osaka? Any other recommended approaches or should I stay put to the Kobe approach?
It was really unfortunate the early ferry is cancelled thst day.
