What is best for travel from Nagoya to Takayama to Kyoto back to Nagoya airport.
Do I need a full JR pass or is there a better/cheaper way to do this.

A Japan Rail Pass won't pay off, you are better buying single tickets as you go.

Whichever way you do it, you'll be going back and forth...
Nagoya - Takayama - Nagoya - Kyoto - Nagoya - Airport
or
Nagoya - Kyoto - Nagoya - Takayama - Nagoya - Airport
And as Aerond says, the RP wouldn't pay off in this case unless you plan to do other rail journeys from Nagoya or Kyoto.
Nagoya - Takayama = Wide View Hida Express
Nagoya - Kyoto = Shinkansen
Nagoya - Airport = Meitetsu Mu-SKY Ltd. Express
