Busses around Dewa Sanzan 2014/8/4 18:16
We are planning to travel to Tsuruoka next Friday, arriving about 9:30 a.m. in Tsuruoka.
Then, we would like to take a bus to Haguro-Center, walk to Sanzan (stay overnight).
Next day bus to Gas-san 8th station, walk to the summit, then to Yudono-san.
Bus back to Tsuruoka. Overnight stay at Tsuruoka.

Is there English speaking information available at Tsuruoka station?
Or does anyone know the time-table for the buses?
We do not speak any Japanese, so some advice beforehand how best to do this would be appreciated.

As long as I have searched, the bus timetable in English was not found.

If you're going to walk the hiking route of Gassan, you should bring the equipment of hiking, such as emergency foods, map, hat, gloves, jacket, medicine, and band-aid.
It is not possible to climb to the summit of Yudonosan, because there is no road. It is possible for you to go to the direction of the Yudonosan Shrine from the summit of Gassan. It is possible for you to go in the direction of the Yudonosan Shrine from the summit of Gassan, but the route there is a steep rocky. You will go down the steep stairs there.

The bus back to Tsuruoka from Yudonosan Shrine departure at 16:45, you should descent up to that time.

Thank you so much for your answer.
I realize that this is a serious mountain hike. The pictures of the stairs are very off-putting, at least from our point of view and especially with the given weather situation.

I did all three in a day on the 29th last month, those are indeed the current bus timetables. Extremely infrequent so be careful.

The hike from Gas-san's 8th station to the summit is actually quite tame as long as you're not too unfit, doable in three hours with no special aids besides sun safety. The descent to Yudono-san is the only somewhat challenging bit, but even that is mostly simple besides a short section with the ladders/ladder-stairs you can see in that blog and a few steepish paths you just need to slow down a bit on.

Honestly I was expecting far worse from all the stories, at least something approaching Fuji-san's difficulty, even bought some overpriced gloves for the descent near Gas-san that never got any use since they weren't needed at all.

PS: When you're descending to Yudono-san there's a section somewhere past the halfway point with a river, turn right for 10~ meters into the shallow river and there's a small stream coming out from the rock on the right with some cups on the ground, delicious and freezing glacial meltwater, recommended by the yamabushi. :)

And don't forget 500 yen for Gas-san and Yudono-san, barely had enough money for the pricey bus back at the end.

According to the weather forecast on this week, it rains many in Tsuruoka. If you're going to climb Gassan, You should check the weather forecast.

You have the option to look around Midagahara Plain near Gassan 8th station, without climbing to the summit.

If you wish, it is possible to go to the shrine Yudonosan by bus from Tsuruoka the next day. You should be checked firmly so that the rules stipulated in their worship of the shrine. When you visit the main hall of the shrine, it is strictly prohibited to reveal about where it was found.
