Foxes in middle of the road in Shiretoko 2015/1/29 19:18
I heard a story back in the 1990s that foxes sit in the middle of the road in Shiretoko National Park. They do this so that tourist cars and buses stop, and they get fed.

Does this still happen? If I came to Shiretoko in June would I see this? Is there a certain road that they do this on?

I am fascinated by this behaviour- how smart foxes are!

We didn't see any fox on the road while driving around Shiretoko, but there were a lot of deer as well as a bear on the road side. There were a few cars stopping ahead of us and like them we stopped and took picture of the bear from inside the car.

Not in Shiretoko but if you want to see fox you can go to the 2 fox farms although the condition is far from ideal as most are kept in cages. There is a back garden where some can run free in Kita Kitsune Northern Fox Village.

The following official website of Kitsune Northern Fox Village is not working. Let's hope it doesn't mean the farm is no longer operating.

I didn't see this behaviour when I went to Shiretoko, but there are explicit warnings that you shouldn't stop and feed the animals and that the foxes specifically were a danger as they carry communicable tapeworms.

Note that you should never feed wildlife human food as it is not good for them, and their becoming accustomed to any handouts may ironically lead to starvation and death as they lose their natural instincts. In the extreme case the animals may end up having to be destroyed.
