2/3 Months travel

Basically, I'm currently living in Japan in the mountains doing a seasonal job. After this I will be driving around Japan travelling and visiting as many places as I can with a friend of mine. I will have a car to use during this time so I am able to visit obscure places away from public transportation too.
My original plan was to travel north from Niigata (where i am now) up into Sapporo then across and down the east coast of japan following down to the very southern point where I want to go to Okinawa then return and travel the west side back up to Niigata before leaving Japan.
I'm generally interested in everything (to a certain extent). Does anything think this is totally unrealistic to do?
Sorry about essay, if more detail is needed just ask. Currently I'm planning the journey so nothing is set.

I don't think it is unrealistic, but it is going to be A LOT of driving. Planning your route ahead of time would be a good idea, and if you're interested in seeing the country, and have lots of time, skip the highways entirely unless it's for sure a boring area/you need to get somewhere fast. That'll save on tolls as well.
When I go on road trips, I usually plan a general route (point a to b, with potential points in between) then just stay at a love hotel on the route. That might get a bit expensive for you depending on how long your trip will be, since they can be hit or miss price-wise, and jack up their prices on holidays. But if the area you're going to doesn't have a good business hotel (The Sun Route or Route Inn chains seems to be almost everywhere, for example), then it's a good choice, especially if you're reaching somewhere late at night.
I've never been to Hokkaido, but we went on an 8 day road trip from Gunma to Niigata/Tohoku for the Sandai Matsuri a few years ago. It was a really great trip, and we got to see a lot of that country. I've also done a 4 day Gunma-Kanazawa-Noto Peninsula-Gunma trip, and another that I think was 5 days, Gunma-Nara-Ise-Gunma. My most recent was just a short weekend trip Gunma-Fukushima-Yamagata-Gunma.
If given the choice, I usually prefer to drive over the train, since I like a lot of flexibility. I think you'll have a lot of fun!

Yea I'm planning on avoiding motorways/toll roads as this will rack up in cost. I'm buying a load of camping equipment also to cut the cost and I plan on using an Onsen or something similar every couple of days. Food will all be from supermarkets to help cut costs too. just need to decide on routes, also I have that problem of having a car when I want to visit a city. More than likely will have to park outside the city then train it in.
