My knowledge is not the same as a local, but it could be two different things.

1) A minor shrine outside the main shrine (close in location). As such, it is a part of the main shrine
2) A minor shrine far away from the main shrine. For example, it's kind of like having a small catholic church that belongs to a large catholic church in a big city.

This is quite common with temples, where there will be a few main temples for a particular sect and many smaller temples scattered throughout the country where people can pray and live but not do major things such as become a monk etc....

It's typically used as the second definition that mfedley gives, in other words, a branch of some larger shrine network. For example satellite Sengen, Tenjin, Hachiman, and Inari shrines are found nationwide. Each of these has one (or sometimes more) main shrines.

Re: What is a satellite shrine? 2015/4/23 10:21
A satellite basically means something that revolves about another. For example, the moon revolves the earth. The earth revolves the sun.

Those things that we humans built to spy on ourselves also revolves the earth, so we call them satillites.

As for satillite shrines that is because of the meaning of satillite: to revolve around something. Does it bring to mind another phrase, "The earth revolves around him." This means he is such a great person, that even the earth revolves for his sake. In another words the satilite shrines revolves around the main shrine. It serves the main shrine. Therefore it could be said to be a branch in a sense.

Let's not forget a basic (non-space) definition of satellite includes:

A small unit in a system or organization that is managed or controlled by a larger, often centrally located unit.

or

a place or facility physically separated from but associated with or dependent on another place or facility.

Satellite shrines literally branch shrines in this sense and are often referred to this way in English writings.
