walks along Oirase stream

Hi.
I will be visiting Oirase stream in late October and will stay near Yakeyama along the stream.
As I will have a full day there, I intend to do a cruise at Lake Towada.
- generally, is a morning or afternoon cruise recommended ?
- how far is it to walk from Yasumiya town (pier) to the statue of the Maidens ?
- is the Kankodai observatory within walking distance from Yasumiya ? If so, how far is it ?
- which are the major 'sights' along the stream that I should visit ?
- as I will be staying at Yakeyama, would it make sense for me to do a short walk along the Oirase stream as I am returning to my hotel from Lake Towada (will be taking the JR bus).
If so, where should I alight from the bus for the walk ?
