Idea for celebrating birthday

Hello everyone!
I hope someone can help me with some good ideas for celebrating a birthday in Japan!
In May I will be in Japan with my boyfriend and his birthday is on the 5th of May. At that time we are in Kyoto and I want to surprise him with doing something fun! I know its Childrenfs Day on the 5th of May so maybe someone knows if there are going to be festivals in Kyoto and if it will be fun to go to?
I was also thinking of going to a theatre performance (like the gear theatre) but as I know only basic Japanese I'm not sure if that will work out.. Does anyone have experience with going to the theater?
If anyone has other ideas (for a nice date) let me know! I was also wondering what is tradition in Japan when celebrating a birthday?
