ltd express/local trains during golden week 2016/4/6 19:57
On my last trip I caught the super azusa limited express from Shinjuku to Matsumoto, then another train to Nagano. I don't remember making a booking or being assigned a seat, it was just like buying a ticket for the metro. How crowded are these trains during golden week? I thought since they don't have reservations, that if I couldn't get to somewhere on a bullet train I could just use one of these, obviously slower of course.

You can always use unreserved seats on Shinkansens as well, unless you go beyond Morioka. (There is another all-reserved Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kanazawa, but in that case the entire route is also served by Shinkansens which are not all-reserved.)
