Is 200,000 Yen enough for 7 days in Tokyo? 2016/5/18 17:16
Dear all, I have read plenty of questions asked by others about how much to bring. But still..I want to reassure what I bring is enough for me and my children.

I'll be bringing my kids (14 and 10) to Tokyo myself in June. Am planning to bring about 200,000 Yen for a 7 days 6 nights trip to Tokyo.

Hotels are paid. Breakfast covered in hotel and Disneyland Tickets are also put aside. The 200,000 Yen basically cover Lunch and Dinner and also Transport and minimum shopping.

Hope to hear from you guys soon!

I think it should be enough to survive for a week.
Transportation in Tokyo is not very expensive. I recommend you take Tokyo Metro. You can travel quite far within a few hundred yen.
If you are not going to eat at an expensive restaurant each time, the cost for three meals a day per person should be less than 3,000 yen.

I could be doing my math wrong but... that's ~9500 yen per person per day. Sure if you all want to eat at a fancy kaiseki place, you will blow through that day's budget, but there are lots of relatively nice places to eat for dinner that will go for 2000-4000 yen, leaving you with on average 5500 yen for activities, shopping and lunch. Lots of places have reasonable lunch sets.

So long as all your hotels are covered outside this amount, you're not planning any unexpected shinkansen trips, and your Disney tickets are prepaid I think you will be fine.

I have calculated my Suica top up amount which amounts to about 200(for 3 of us) I think I can put that aside too.

So meaning 200,000 Yen is just for Lunch and Dinner and a little snacks and shopping.

Actually last 3 days will be staying at Disney Resort.
I really hope I can stick to my budget.

It is on tight budget as kids at 10 14 can eat a lot more than adult and too much restriction may not be good for holiday. Bring a little more else have to watch the budget carefully. My wife and I have decent chinese dinner or korean dinner will cost us 4000 Yen+ and lunch if not for fast food can also cost 3000 yen+ for two of us. there are snack in between and some entry to attractive sight seeing place. Transportation so long is within Tokyo using metro is resonable but no express train or shinkansen. We spend total 190000 Yen for 7 days 6 nights with JR wide pass for 3 days and three meals/day with litlle shopping budget at 60000 yens. Hope it can give u some reference.

Most of affordable restaurants in Japan shows price list which can been seen from outside. I want show you the example so I googled "restaurant in Tokyo price list outside" and found the following page.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2040.html

Oh, it's a page of Japanguide!

At any rate, you will know the price for the meal you want to have before entering the restaurant. You should avoid places that doesn't show the price, as far as you are a first-timer.

I think you don't want to eat at restaurants for every meal: sometimes light snacks from the convenience store should be enough. Well, about 2000 yen for each person per day will be average. You can enjoy fancy dinners twice or three times with your budget, I think.

Oh I see. Thanks Elbert! and everyone else for your input.
Really appreciate it.

Should I bring the extra cash and exchange for Yen there if not enough or change more just in case?

What we do is we watch our budget and when needed we sign card for dinner or goods purchase as the card exchanged rate not too bad for us. at end of the day we only sign two bills and the budget is well planned. forgot to mention in the 190K yen we had we make a mistake to take a Taxi to visit one of the flower park that cost us 9200 yen to/fro. U could avoid that. also we told Bento the mocrowave version for 3 morning when we travel Shinkansen on the Jr wide pass and one bento cost us 1300 yen each. The JR wide Pass is at 10K yen each.

Bring extra cash to change. I doubt you would need to change it but just in case. You can also use your atm/credit cards in the worse case scenario so there isnt much worries.

Hi Elbert, Oh I see. I won't be taking Shinkansen or taxi (I hope not).
Breakfast is included in Hotel package.
But you are right in teens eat a lot. I will assume them to buy many snacks to munch during the day.
I'll increase my budget to maybe 250,000 Yen then.

Oh, so I take 200,000 yen with me and bring the extra cash in Singapore dollars there?

Singapore $ cannot be changed in Tokyo I believe. Use credit card is the best option after watching the cash (Yen) budget.

US$, Taiwan $ Chinese RMB etc amongst a few others can be exchanged there. Perhaps not enough Singapore tourist so the currency is not popular there... I feel credit card is Ok in Tokyo restaurant and shopping mall so far ... Also Yen is at very high now changing too much cost exchanged suffer should need to do reversed. Do a detail calculation and changed just a bit more than enough will do.

There is no need to bring extra cash to exchange. Use a credit card in a 7-11 ATM machine.
