Rustic onsen town near Tokyo

Hi, I am a big fan of rotenburo and I would like to try one everytime I traveled to japan (I've been to Kusatsu, Hirayu and Jozankei). Next visit I will be travelling with my friend (usually I travel alone) and I'd like her to try rotenburo with a rustic atmosphere near Tokyo. So far my choices are Shiobara, Takaragawa and Yunishigawa onsen. We will have a tight budget so we can't afford to stay at one of their ryokan. And we will use seishun kippu so it will take more time to travel.
So the question is:
1. Which one will you recommend for a day trip?
2. Are they worth the effort to travel from tokyo (likely 3hrs one way)?
