6-day Itinerary in Fukuoka 2016/6/6 12:40
My family of 5 is arriving in Fukuoka on August 7 (8pm) and departing on August 14 at 8:45 pm. Kindly provide a suggested 6-day itinerary for us to see and appreciate the beauty of Fukuoka preferably in sites where it is accessible by train. We are travelling on a strict budget.

Most sights are accessible by train or subway in Fukuoka. If you click on the destination section of this website and select Fukuoka, then you find many options to visit.

There is also a inexpensive tourist loop bus that will take you to certain areas for 100 yen per trip. There is also a 500 yen day pass.

The subway has a day pass also for 500/700 yen. I forget which.

It will be very hot, most likely. Personally, aside from the park I didnt find anything of much interest in Fukuoka. A day or two would be plenty. But a very cheap train ride along the Karatsu line would get you to some really nice areas of coastline.

We just spent a couple of days at Karatsu. It got pretty quiet on Sunday, but the town itself is nice.

We also had a lot of fun at Yufuin, but I think the train cost to there was a fair bit higher. If you can get to Haus Ten Bosch, get off to the Nagasaki BioPark (shuttle bus from the theme park). I had the most fun there ever, and it is pretty cheap.

6 days just Fukuoka is a bit boring perhaps should explore the north Kyushu at leas and look for using one of the Kyusu rail pass. Places like Beppu is nice to do a day trip etc

Kitakyushu/Mojiko would be a inexpensive option for a day.

Dazaifu also for a 3/4 day.

Someone already mention the cheaper commuter train to Karastu.

Fukuoka is really a gateway to northern Kyushu. IF you are willing to get a 3 day Northern Kyushu Pass. Then I'd visit Nagasaki, Beppu and Yufuin as day trips.

Two days would probably be enough for Fukuoka City itself. Maybe 3 if you go shopping more and stretch out the sightseeing a little.

It really depends on what you wanna see and how much you are willing to spend.

I'm guessing you've already got some things you've planned to do, since you've booked the flights already?

Do you have a reason to spend 6 days in Fukuoka?

I am visiting Fukuoka from the USA and today is day 6. We purchased a 5 day Northern Kyushu Rail Pass before we left the states. It has made it very easy for several day trips out of Hakata station. We have been to Nagasaki - Dazaifu - Kokura and Mojiko. This has been a magnificent trip for us. Very interesting - lots to see and do. I highly recommend purchasing a rail pass if you are eligible.

Fukuoka's a great place, but 6 days might be a bit much for the city alone. A wider northern Kyūshū trip - with Fukuoka as a base or one of the bases - might make more sense.

Purely as an example, here's a 6-day northern Kyūshū journey I took last year:

https://withinstrikingdistance.wordpress.com/category/travel/japan/jap...

I wouldn't recommend following this course exactly, partly because it wasn't my first visit to the region (so I spent less time there as I'd already seen a lot of it before), but also because that 2015 trip included Kumamoto, which was badly hit by the recent quake and where some attractions (like the castle) are likely to remain closed for the foreseeable future. But it might give you an idea of what you can do with six days in the area.

I don't know how tight your budget is, but depending on how far/often you travel, the Northern Kyūshū version of the Kyūshū Rail Pass might help save you money:

Fukuoka is no Kyoto, certainly, and a couple of days are enough, but there are a number of good places to see - most are not well publicized, though you can definitely find them if you look. The Nanzoin Temple is a tremendous place, and only about 20 minutes by train from Hakata Stn.

And there are some very beautiful gardens, like Yusentei, Shofuen, Rakusuien, and at Ohori Park. Plus the sunset from Odo Park is very beautiful.

A Fukuoka Tourist City Pass is a great way to get around:
https://yokanavi.com/en/tourist-city-pass/
but many places are near a subway station, and a day pass is just 620 yen (520 yen weekends).
Seeing Kitakyushu also is a good idea, and neglected by most. Kokura Castle is not bad, the Moji Retro area preserves a Japan from a century ago, and the view from atop Sarakurayama especially around sunset is a secret jewel that even the well traveled mostly don't know.

You could even walk under the ocean to Honshu and see a bit of Shimonoseki if you wish:

And if you like to go hiking, there is some great hiking in Aburayama, Shikanoshima, and Nokonoshima Island.
Dazaifu's famous Tenmangu shrine is nice, though you'll be through it in less than 20-30 minutes. The Kyushu National Museum is good, if you like museums, but 3/4 of a day is more than plenty, and I suggest you take a few hours and go see Yanagawa for the canal boats. On the way back, you could even visit some of the hot springs at Futsukaichi - which are free from the tourist crowds and have a history going back over 1300 years.
The suggestion of a 3 day JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass is a winner, and it is easy to get you money's worth off of it. Nagasaki is one of the most interesting places on Kyushu.

If for some reason you don't want to travel so far, you could take a day trip to nearly islands like Iki for a day.

Kurume has a few places as well, including the Naritasan Jibo Kannon,

and nearby a partially recreated settlement from the Yayoi Period (300 BC - 300 AD) at the Yoshinogari Park.

You should have a very rewarding time.
