Nachi Fire Festival during day or night?

Hi guys,
I've been receiving a mixture of contradicting info on the Nachi Fire Festival. I was told by some locals that it happens at night, but on the internet I can only find the date, and one website stating that it ends at 3PM in the afternoon.
As I have an exam that morning, I wont be able to reach Nachi until 5 PM at the earliest. Will I have missed the festival?
Other than that: transportation to Nachi is hugely expensive as I am not eligible to use the JR Pass (I have an exchange student visa, so I cant buy the JR Pass). It costs about 7000 yen one way. I cant find any buss deals or discount cards that allow me to go there cheaper (Seishun 18 kippu is not valid until the day after the festival unfortunately). An y tips?
