First time in Japan 2016/7/4 14:18
Hello everyone,

My friend and I are planning our first Japan trip for 2 weeks coming this September to October 2016.
Please give us advice on how to get around Japan. We are trying to figure out if we need to purchase a 7 days or 14 days JR pass. Here is a sample of our itinerary. Please help us out, any suggestion or advice would be greatly appreciated. If you have time, the more details, the better. :) We tried to plan and research online but we are confused and not sure what's the best option for our travel plan. Thank you for your time.

9/25, arrival in Narita airport, Tokyo (check in hotel in Shinjuku)
9/26, Tokyo
9/27, Tokyo
9/28 traveling from Tokyo to Kanazawa
9/29 traveling from Kanazawa to Kyoto
9/30 Kyoto
10/1 Kyoto
10/2 Kyoto-Nara (would like to visit Nara if it's convienent)
10/3 Kyoto
10/4 traveling from Kyoto to Osaka
10/5 Osaka
10/6 Osaka
10/7 traveling from Osaka to Tokyo
10/8 traveling from Tokyo to Hakone
10/9 Hakone to Narita airport, departure after 5:00pm

* We plan to take the limousine bus from Narita airport to our hotel in Shinjuku.
* What option do we have traveling from Hakone to Narita airport?
* We plan to use the forwarding luggage system from hotel to hotel, how much does it cost?
* We plan to rent wifi in Japan for the whole trip, is it pricy?

Sorry, I know we have a ton of questions. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and help us.

Nationwide JR Pass is good for long-distance (between cities) travel on Shinkansen. A 7-day Rail Pass usually pays off (or breaks even) if you do a "return trip" between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka within a 7-day period, and a 14-day pass pays off if you do a return between Tokyo - Osaka/Kyoto - Hiroshima then back to Tokyo within a 14-day period, all on JR Shinkansen.

In your case, counting from the day you depart from Tokyo to Kanazawa, you are doing neither of these long-distance trips, so I would say buying an individual tickets, or some regional passes (that I'm not too familiar with).

For the way back, I might stop over in Hakone on your way from Osaka to Tokyo (get off the JR Shinkansen at Mishima or Odawara), so that you are in Tokyo the night before your flight out of Narita.

- You "could" take JR Narita express (NEX) from Narita airport to your hotel in Shinjuku too.
- Hakone-yumoto to Odawara, then take JR from Odawara to Tokyo or Shinagawa, then change to Narita Express.
- Depends on the size of the suitcase and distance.
- There are different rental companies, but my friends visiting Japan have rented and found them fine.

A 7 day pass wouldn't work. A 14 day pass would. But you'd need to figure out your costing to see if ti is worth it.

One of the days to go osaka to tokyo, then tokyo to hakone on the next. why not just osaka to hakone instead?

narita to shinjuku can be done by N'EX service and hakone/Odawara to Narita can be done by shinkensan+N'EX. Further extending the value of a 14 day JR pass.

You could possibly consider this pass:

Please check the individual train fare to see if it truly pays off for your itinerary.

Re: First time in Japan 2016/7/4 15:56
that might work. 14 day pass = 46,XXX yen

4000 yen return N'Ex ticket
24000 yen 7D arch pass
14000 yen osaka to tokyo (full price reserved seat shinkansen ticket - cheaper options are available.
total = 42,000 yen

that covers all days except 2x osaka days and 2x tokyo days. it depends on the itinerary of those 4 days as to whether a 14D JR pass would work filling up the other 4,000 yen.

Thank you for everyone comments. We were thinking of purchasing theb14 days pass bc of the way our intineary works. It's our first trip do we didn't know how to plan it well traveling from one city to the next. We should of posted our question for help before booking out hotels.

At first we thought the travel distance between Osaka to hakone would be too long, We thought it was around 4 hours? Is this incorrect? That is why the itinerary change from Osaka to Tokyo then Tokyo to Hakone. We still can change our intineary from Osaka to hakone and then stay in Tokyo then depart if that makes more sense.
Thank you for helping everyone!
I posted a similar threat to this one, please disregard the other one.
