January. Nagano or Fuji area

Hello, I would be going to Japan in mid January. Points to consider are that - I just want a relaxing trip - to me onsens are a big part of relaxing - I've been to Japan a few times now but have only seen my Fuji once from a Shinkansen window - I heard that Mt Fuji is clearer in winter - daylight is lesser in mountainous regions and winter
I am planning to travel from Tokyo to Toyama. The question is whether to stay 2 nights in Nagano or to stay one in Nagano and one in the Fuji area. I am thinking of fujigoko, though if the onsens are substantially better in Hakone do recommend that. (I understand that Hakone is overpriced but since I wouldn't have time to go to kusatsu , Fuji and then to Toyama...)
Anyone have any suggestions on the route that should be taken. Note: I do plan to go to the Fuji area sometime in May sometime else, is it truly significantly less visible in non winter months?
