Asahidake Ropeway or Kurodake Ropeway? 2017/4/18 12:18
Which one is more scenic and makes better pictures?

Do you have to make a reservation for the express bus to Asahidake?
Do you have to make a reservation for the Dohoku bus for Kurodake?
If so, how?

It depends on your sense. However, Asahidake appears more popular on the net. Asahidake faces to the west, so the afternoon would be better by the sunshine. But usually, the weather would be better in the morning. Kurodake looks towards the east. The weather effect would be less. However, Kurodake Ropeway is not the end. There is another lift to the summit. At the end of the lift, one hour walk to the summit of Kurodake. Asahidake Ropeway is the end, but two hours walk to the summit of Asahidake. Most people just walk around the upper station of Asahidake Ropeway. There is almost no space to walk around at the upper station of Kurodake Ropeway. Kurodake is covered by grass, while Asahidake by rocks and a pond.

Both buses to Asahidake and Kurodake do not accept reservations.

Oh, a tricky choice! The panoramic views from the top of the Kurodake ropeway really are fantastic (and for me personally better in 'photographic' terms) and the village is so charming!

On the other hand, as Luis said, the Asahidake ropeway offers far more possibilities and you can still take some great photos of the immediate landscape if the weather is bad for panoramic shots.

If there is any way you can do both, I'd highly recommend it, as the scenery they each offer is very different!

But be advised that Hokkaido weather is very unpredictable and that even on good days, panoramic photography is ruined by the haze, especially in the summer! A firm recommendation is that whichever you go for, be sure to take the earliest (or possibly the latest) ropeway available if you want the best light!

Buried somewhere in my blog, you'll find pix I took of both. Sorry, but its late and I'm too exhausted to dig out the precise pages, so you'll just have to scroll through the blog yourself to find them! My apologies!

Asahidake. The pond and sulfurous vents swing my vote.
