Asahidake or Sounkyo & Kurodake in early May 2017/4/23 14:57
Hi all,

I'm looking to do some light hiking in the first week of May this year and I'm choosing between staying in Asahidake Onsen and hiking Mt. Asahidake, or staying in Sounkyo Onsen and hiking Mt. Kurodake.

I'm a bit worried about the conditions at this time of year; I hear that there's still snow on the ground and my hiking partner doesn't own a good pair of boots.

I'll also be traveling in from Sapporo on public transit! This will be my first time in Japan so I am utterly clueless other than what I can find on the internet (which basically all recommend winter or summer itineraries...not much information on spring!) Any recommendations with transportation, lodging, or itinerary would be greatly appreciated :)

Mt. Daisetsu is basically in a snow season in May. 52 out of 62 recorded snow on the ground.

Asahidake Onsen is only for Asahidake Ropeway, however, Sounkyo (Onsen) has some others than Kurodake Ropeway.

There are hiking trails from Shirogane Onsen, near the blue bond of Biei, to the Bogakudai Observatory. The record is 51/72, still in snow, but a bit more popular than Asahidake in May.
