JR pass for Tokyo-Hakone-Kyoto-Osaka? 2017/5/1 20:20
Hi!

Me and a friend will be going to Japan over ten days in June, and I wanted to know if getting the JR pass would save money, and if yes, what day we should activate a 7-day JR pass?

Day 1 - Tokyo
Day 2 - Tokyo
Day 3 - Tokyo to Hakone
Day 4 - Hakone to Kyoto
Day 5 - Kyoto
Day 6 - Kyoto to Osaka
Day 7 - Osaka to Tokyo
Day 8 - Tokyo
Day 9 - Tokyo (Fly back home)

Thank you very much in advance!

It will provide small savings but limit you to less frequent Hikari trains between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka (not usually a big issue). It also gives you to flexibility to make some major side trips by JR flexibly at no additional cost. If you use a pass, I recommend using it from day 3 so it covers all the medium- and long-distance trips and the ride to the airport.
