Two friends are conversing, and one mentions an incident where an acquaintance committed a crime against him. The other friend expresses concern, and the first friend replies: 「あはは大丈夫。再起不能にしてやったから。」

From Googling, it seems that 再起不能にする means "to wreck beyond hope of recovery"; is he just saying, "it's OK; I wrecked him/beat him up really well (in revenge)"?

Yes, "in revenge" is from the context, but that is what he is saying, "haha, it's OK, I beat him up really good."

It depends on the "crime" and what he did to him in retaliation. It can be physical or mental/social that he can not recover from easily. If physical, to be able to not recover, itself is a crime. If mental/social, losing big money, his job, social or work place embarrassment, isolation/outcast from, family, friend, lover, etc.
