Ireland to Japan? 2017/6/18 20:54
Hi! So I currently live in Ireland, and I'm planning a trip to Tokyo for next June. So I need a little help on some things. If you don't know the answer to a few questions, please answer the questions you know the answer for, because any type of help would be highly appreciated! Thank you!
- Firstly, I need a cheap airline. I'm willing to spend at least 550 euro each for the flights. I know airlines like Emirates are very expensive. I also can fly from different airports, such as London (or anywhere in the UK) or Paris, so even flights from there would be great.
- How much would Japan Rail Passes would be? And where would be the best place to buy them?
- I plan to get an AIRBNB, how much would you say would be suitable for a night? There's 5 people going to be going there, including myself. I'm asking this because I don't want to be overcharged for a place to stay.
- What would be the best way to get from Tokyo to Kyoto? I know the bullet train is very expensive, so that's a no go. If we can't find anything cheaper, we won't be going to Kyoto.
- Is there anything I should be aware of before going there?
- What would I need to know before going there?
Thank you! I will appreciate every answer! Have a nice day!

Next year air ticket price will be undecided, it depends on oil and financial markets.
Although the night bus is cheap(around 4000Y) fr Tokyo to Kyoto, but the Rail Pass not covered.

However, June is Rainy season, it does not ard for long time every day, but basically not recommended.
Also there is no traditional festivals and big events maybe no good for first timers.

Keep an eye at the prices of Turkish Airlines; SAS has cheap offers too and make sure to book early and pick the days of the week that are less popular. I believe Kayak.com lists the cheapest flights.

Earlier this year I stayed at an AirBnb around Tokyo which was affordable and turned out to be the whole house, very nice if you're with a large group: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/6050643?eluid=0&euid=e150c8fd-82aa-0286-f...

Railpasses have fixed prices - look them up online; and the rail pass can be used for your trip to Kyoto ; in that case use the shinkansen.

A thing to be aware of: Take the expenses for transportation and food into account when making your calculations, I always spent more on this in Japan than I think would have been possible :-)

If youfre flexible with regards to dates and times, itfs possible to find a pretty cheapish ticket I suppose? Booking in advance might help and maybe keep an eye on deals from the more major airlines that fly from airports that are easy to reach for you.

The JPR can be pretty expensive. A national 7-day pass is almost 300 euro p.p. and I'm not sure if it's worth it for a round trip to and from Kyoto. If you do get the pass, you need to order it online in advance (I used the official website for this) – youfll get a voucher which you can exchange in Japan.

If a JPR and a trip to Kyoto turns out to be too expensive, you could also consider a Tokyo wide pass (valid 3 days in a row and maybe 100 euro?) which can take you to Fuji five lakes (Kawaguchiko) and Nikko, and well... I don't know, one other destination (or spend a night in Nikko). Though you would have to do these daytrips on consecutive days.

Leaving aside the railpass, a day trip to Kamakura would also not be very expensive (on this site you can find more information about it and also a transportation tourist pass specifically for Kamakura and surroundings). Ifve never been there, but Ifve heard good things. It seems like a good option from Tokyo. Of course, you could also spend a few nights there if you want a change in accomadation from Tokyo.

For convenience sake, maybe you can get a pasmo or suici card? Itfs a public transport card like the Oyster card that you can put money on and is handy to have. We ordered it at the same time as the JPR, but I think you can just get it when already in Japan (at the airport or something) just as easily.

Other things you need to know – well, take a look at the ebefore you gof page on this website. And maybe, make sure you have cash on hand? Itfs still the preferred payment option most of the time. There are ATMs at the railway stations and 7-11 and other small grocery stores.

- set up some alerts on skyscanner, or similar website, for flight prices. Stick yourself on airline's email lists to get info on offers/promotions
- have a look on this website (or just Google) to find out about the cost of rail passes
- look on AirBnB to see how much an AirBnB in Japan costs
- have a look on this website (or just Google) to find out about how to get from Tokyo to Kyoto and how much it costs/how long it takes

You want a cheap holiday to Japan, and it's not cheap, so that looks like your first issue. It costs (flights/transport/accommodation). The trains (and JRP) are exceptional value for money if used well. For a 1000km round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto of course it is going to cost and you pay for comfort/speed on the trains. If you want cheap, there is the bus.

And beware many AirBNB listings are illegal rentals (in Japan and many other major cities around the world), so don't rely too heavily on that as people do find their accommodation cancelled last minute or get evicted by annoyed neighbours.
