Bad Japanese Gynecologist? 2017/7/12 13:59
I am on track to do a study aboard in Japan and one of the boys in my class made a remark that I was going to be sexually assaulted, I know about the groping on public transit, but with further research I unfortunately saw many videos of young girls in Japan being sexually assaulted by a male gynecologist. As a young girl using birth control and visiting her gynecologist regularly for heath reasons this terrifies me that I may not be able to have the care I need.
Thank You
And I don't mean to offend I am just really frightened that I wont be able to find a female gynecologist.

I'm sure the videos you found were just some weird porn and not the actual treatment a gynecologist gives his/her patients; they would lose their license immediately. Find a female gynecologist if that makes you more comfortable.

True, if it happens you can file a complain against them.
But so far I think you watched just one video, in which it happen, doesn't represent the total.

You dont need to be worried

If any doctor posted a video of him assaulting a patient he would be arrested. I think you accidentally saw some medical fetish porn. Also, that's terrible of your classmate to say. Groping is a problem, but not at the level that it happens to every woman here or that it's even likely to happen. Please don't be too nervous.

Generally in Japan when you hear women complain about gynecologists it's because there are some doctors here with a very stiff bedside manner or who aren't clear about explaining what they're doing, and because the pill is still not as common as in the west so can be harder to get (this may have changed as I haven't heard this particular complaint in the past few years, but a few years ago, especially older doctors would discourage going on the pill). There are many very good female gynecologists, some of whom even speak English if that's important to you. I found mine through my embassy website, so you can try looking there for a list of professionals.

And just to let you know in advance, birth control medication is not easily available in Japan.
In Japan, it is not an OTC drugs and you will need to get a doctor prescription.
If you really dependent on the medication, consider bringing in from your home but large amount for own consumption require custom declaration.
Another thing is it is not cover by Japanese Health Insurance.

And yes, as other have said you should not be worry about it. And if your not comfortable, just stick to female doctor. Those video may have been fake or pron.

I've seen quite a few OB/GYN in Japan... at least 5 or 6, and the majority were men, but I had absolutely no problems with any of them, and didn't feel uncomfortable at all (well... except for The Chair, but that's standard practice so you'll just have to get used to it!) If you're uncomfortable, as others have said, you should be able to find a female doctor to attend you, but also just go with your gut feeling. You should always feel comfortable with your doctor, it makes the process easier!

As someone who has visited gynecologists many times in Japan, I have also never had an issue. The bedside manner can be jarring (some put a curtain between the doctor and patient which can feel very strange and isolating to those familiar with Western practices) but if you find a doctor who trained outside of Japan or speaks English, it is likely that they will use practices that you are more familiar with. There are several good English-speaking gynecologists in Tokyo, and I imagine in other large cities, including some women if that makes you more comfortable. I have never heard a story about anyone being assaulted by a gynecologist here. But the notes about BC not being covered by insurance is true - you will need to go to a doctor and pay out of pocket for the prescription.

I agree with Jim and Vita about what you might have accidentally watched.

I (Japanese woman) have been to a few gynecologists in Tokyo over the years and have had no issue. True, you need to go to one to get birth control pills/shots, so if you are staying in Japan for an extended time, you will need to go visit their clinic. If you happen to come to an area near myself, and need a female gynecologist (English-speaking as well), I will send you a recommendation. Rest assured.
