Travel from Kyoto to access Kumano Kodo trail

I am staying in Kyoto for a couple of days. I'd like to do a multi-day hike [maybe 3 days] whilst I am in the area. I saw some pics of the Kumano Kodo trail and that appeals. I'm trying to get a sense of how long it would take to travel there by public transport. But is it >3 hours?
