Itinerary Review: 15-day Japan Trip in May 2024/4/20 03:22
We are planning a 15-day first-time trip to Japan in mid-May. Based on separate discussions, the following is a draft itinerary. Please review and provide feedback in terms of general flow and transportation:

1. Tokyo (4 nights), travel to Kanazawa (either direct or via Takayama? Unclear?)

2. Kanazawa (3nights), or Kanazawa (2 nights) and Takayama (1 night)

3. Hiroshima / Miyajima (2 nights)

4. Kyoto (4 nights) including one night in Koya-san (should it be before or after 3 nights in Kyoto), and day trip to Nara

5. Hakone (2 nights), return to Haneda airport directly from Hakone by 2:00PM on the same day to catch a 5 PM international flight.

Does the above itinerary make sense? I am primarily interested in planning the details of various travel logistics using public transportation via Shinkansen, trains, busses and ferries. No idea how to go about planning all the domestic travels within Japan.

While it makes sense. It is very busy. And limited days at most bigger locations.

4 days in Kyoto with an overnight at Koyasan, means you really only have 2 days in Kyoto. Seems a waste.

Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Hakone is all you should do.

I don't know what you intend to do for 3 nights in Kanazawa, but 3 nights are a lot!!!
By the way, only 4 nights in Kyoto are very little counting Nara.

Re: Itinerary Review: 15-day Japan Trip in May 2024/4/21 14:18
Based on various inputs, we have decided to drop Kanazawa altogether and have added an extra day to Takayama and Kyoto. Our revised 15-day itinerary is as follows:

Tokyo (4 nights)
- Travel: Tokyo Shinjuku to Takayama

Takayama (2 nights)
- Day trip to Shirakawa go
- Travel to Kyoto

Kyoto (4 nights)
- Day trip to Nara (?)
- Travel: To Hiroshima (will Himeji Castle be on the way?)

Hiroshima / Miyajima (2 nights)
- Possible one night in Miyajima (?)
- Travel to Koyasan (via Osaka or Namba?)

Koyasan (1 night)
- Travel to Hakone (via Odawara?)

Hakone (2 nights)
- Travel directly to Haneda airport to reach by 2 PM (via Odawara?)

Does the above itinerary make more sense? Is there a way to modify this itinerary so that on the last day we can fly back to Tokyo Haneda from Hiroshima or Kyoto/Osaka instead of depending on ground transportation from Hakone to reach Haneda in time for the 5 PM flight?

Need recommendation regarding planning the optimum travel between cities.
Which one is the most comprehensive mega travel website for coordinating all domestic travel within Japan?
Is it https://japantravel.navitime.com/en/area/jp/route/?
Are there other websites to consider?
Are there JR or other discounts for our specific itinerary?

Hallo Abandon.....

As you were radical and cut out Kanazawa, you could also do it with Takayama (to visit Hida Folk?) and Shirakawa (it's also beautiful, but you travel a long time to see it and leave in 1 hour!!!), not that they're not worth it It's worth it, they are interesting but they are not suitable for those who have little time, you could leave them for a next trip.
See here and if you really can't miss it.... visit them:
Takayama: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5900.html
Shirakawa-go: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5950.html
If you move, you could enjoy it more in other places and you wouldn't have to be stressed.

Tokyo - (4 nights) to

Kyoto - (5 nights) including a day in Nara) to

Hiroshima / Miyajima (2 nights)
- "Possible one night in Miyajima (?)" yes, but from Miyajima to Hiroshima it is only 10 minutes by ferry + 20 minutes by bus to the Hiroshima railway station!)
In addition to changing hotels, you would have your bags, if you haven't already sent them elsewhere)
In the MORNING to

Himeji - (it's 1 hour and a half to Himeji) you can visit Himeji in 4 hours...

OSAKA - (1 night) visit Osaka the night after Himeji you won't regret it, the small alleys, the lighting of Minami (Namba) and many other entertainments in Osaka.
https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2157.html
Early in the MORNING of the next day I
If you are in Osaka you have to go to NAMBA and take another train)

Koyasan - (1 night) to

Odawara (2 nights) from Kyasan to Odawara is almost 6 hours of travel!!! If you arrive in the afternoon, at the station you would buy Hakone Freepass and visit the castle and/or the city.
https://www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/hakone/ (see everything you can see and do, from the volcano, the pirate ship to seeing Mount Fuji from the cable car if the weather is good!!!! !
The next morning I would use the Pass, do the entire program and GO BACK to Odawara (I would do the same program as the trip to the Lake) to

Haneda airport - after breakfast from Odawara to Haneda is another 2 hours by train.....

Navitime is very good, but it only reports on JR trains!!!! the Pass for your trip and due to the price increase in October it is not worth it, but you can also calculate the price at JR and see if it is worth it for you.
https://japantravel.navitime.com/en/area/jp/route/
I always use Google Maps, it gives options for trains and/or buses.
To do Kyoto/Nara/Himeji/Hiroshima/Miyajima etc you could use the Kansai Wide Area Pass and most importantly...it also gives you the right to go to Kyasan!!!!!
https://www.japan-rail-pass.com/de/transfer/japan-rail-pass/regional/k...
(Please, I took this route twice before Covid, you should check when purchasing the wide pass if it still gives you the right to go to Koyasan)

Re: Itinerary Review: 15-day Japan Trip in May 2024/4/23 05:28
Continuing on the above discussion, how does Miyama (30 km from Kyoto) compare as a replacement for Shirakawa-Go? We were primarily going to Kanazawa and Takayama to visit Shirakawa-go. However, as was suggested above, it may be too much travel overhead to travel so far out of the way to visit just Shirakawa-go. Someone advised Miyama as a replacement for Shirakawa-go. Since we will already be visiting Kyoto, Miyama could be a short day trip from Kyoto. Do you advise an overnight stay in Miyama? Do you advise renting a car in Kyoto to visit Miyama? Above all, is Miyama a good replacement for Shirakawa-go?

Not comparable. Totally different.

Ignore my last response. Sorry I totally read Miyajima, not Miyama in my mind.

They are similar. Should save you a day or two in your itinerary.

Re: Itinerary Review: 15-day Japan Trip in May 2024/4/23 16:12
Hallo Aband ...

Yes...the two villages are similar.

From Kyoto you can take the train to JR Sonobe station, (express train 30 minutes - normal train 50 minutes) and from there you must take the Nantan bus, I believe it takes almost 1 hour.

Yes, you can rent a car, if you don't want to waste time on trains and buses it's a matter of money and time....

As for sleeping.... in Miyama there are 2 accommodations, they are very good but the price is like 5 stars, for normal hotels you have to take the bus and go back to the center, besides, for May I believe it will be difficult to make a reservation.
