How is everyone wrong, Japan is made up of thousands of islands no one gave an exact number not even yourself.

The truth is the vast majority of them are not inhabited so it doesn't really matter that much, some are also in dispute with other countries as well.

This is an old thread anyways, the vast majority of people in Japan live in the islands of Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku. Then you can count in the island(s) of the Ryukyu Islands which includes Okinawa.
