Kagoshima City to Kagoshima Airport

Can I get to Kagoshima Airport from Kagoshima City via JR train? Or by taking a JR train to a stop near the airport, and then take a taxi the rest of the way? Would it practical to do so?
I will have a rail pass at the time, and I would prefer to use it rather than paying for bus or taxi.

There is no train going all the way to the airport and the easiest and recommended way is by airport bus (40-60 minutes depending on pick up place, 1200 yen).

There are some JR stations in relative close distance to the airport, but they are along a minor line and might not have any taxis waiting outside. And the taxi ride is likely to cost around 1000 yen. I personally think it is not worth the effort.
